Review of Sailing Activities at the Club
Report by Ian Renilson
A meeting was called to review reasons for low attendance at
club racing, and produce suggestions for changes to improve attendance.
It was attended by around 20 people who were fairly
representative of sailing members, except that there were not many keelboat
sailors.
The meeting discussed reasons for reduced participation at
club events, and then it reviewed various proposals, and produced other
proposals that were also reviewed.
The overall impression of the meeting was that:
-
Regular club sailing should be less intrusive into busy modern schedules
-
Additional ‘special’ events should be scheduled to make-up for the reduction
in regular club sailing – these special events can be entered into people’s
calendars at the beginning of the year.
-
Club sailing should be linked to social activities to improve the overall
effect
The key recommendations were:
-
Regular club weekend racing should be moved from Sundays to Saturdays
-
Saturday racing would start mid-afternoon, be increased to 3 races, and run
into early evening, followed by a social event at the club (eg BBQ etc).
-
Special events should be organised, such as:
-
Mid-week mini-series of evening races (Wed-Fri of one week)
-
Closed Club Regattas (all-day, or all-weekend)
-
Training weekends or training days at the weekend
-
Match Racing &/or Team Racing
-
8-hour race
-
Mid-week racing could be moved to Thursday so that there is a gap between
the training and racing nights.
-
Mid-week evening racing should be increased to 2 races while there is enough
light during the summer.
-
Dinghy & keelboat activities should become more integrated
-
There should be more interactivity with other local clubs
