Dalgety Bay Sailing Club held their Annual Open Regatta on the 16th and 17th May with traveller events for Finn, RS200, Scottish Skiffs and Solo Scottish Championships.  Racing took place on two courses on the River Forth to the south and southwest of the Club's attractive Clubhouse and grounds.  DBSC is very grateful to their main sponsor, Alfred Stewart Properties Ltd, for the financial input that helped to create a very successful and enjoyable event.  The forecasted weather did not fully materialise and whilst Saturday started windy with a big swell on both race areas the Race Officers John Robertson and Robert Taylor managed to get three races in testing and shifting conditions.

The Solos had some exciting and close racing with Jim Hunt, Andy Davies (Chase SC) and Robbie Wilson (Wormit BC) taking the top spots overnight.

In the RS200’s Robbie Burns and Victoria Simpson (Largs SC) managed a 1,1,2 to lead the fleet from Chris Pickles and Laura Westrell from Delph Sailing Club.

The 16 strong skiff fleet were led by Ian Renilson (Dalgety Bay) in his Musto Skiff with Paul Hignett (Loch Vennacher) challenging in the windy races 1 and 3 in a foiling Moth. The conditions were challenging for the Laser 4000s and Vortex.

In the seven strong fast handicap fleet competition was fierce with only 4 points separating the top five with the Fireballs taking overnight honours from the RS300s.

After a heavy and enjoyable day on the water the competitors were treated to live entertainment by a local band made up of some of the Sailing Club members. Apart from being a little deaf on the Sunday morning everyone was on the water bright and early to make the 10.30 start in perfect conditions with sunshine and a force 3-4 south easterly breeze proving that the forecasters get things wrong.

Jim Hunt in the Solo took the series convincingly with 3 firsts on the Sunday to win the series with a perfect scoreline of 5 points.  Andy Davis sailed consistently to maintain second and Robbie Wilson held on to third overall, and first Scottish boat.  Kevan Gibb must have drunk something special on Saturday night as he charged up the leaderboard to finish in fourth.

In the 200’s Robbie Burns had a challenge from Chris Pickles (Delph SC) who scored a 2,1,3 on the day but Robbie won with 6 points in the end counting 6 bullets over the 6 race series. A charge from the local crew of Keith Cuthbert and David Milroy showed that age and mass makes a difference in the breeze.

The Scottish Skiffs again came down to Ian Renilson and Paul Hignett with Paul showing blistering speed in the Moth but in the end Ian won on 6 points to Paul’s 9.  Andrew Hooton from Loch Lomond SC came in third in his Musto Skiff and the leading Laser 4000 was Roger Carter and Ian Robertson from Wormit Boating Club.

In the Fast handicap fleet the visiting Fireballs from Aberdeen and Stonehaven took first and second with Colin Ladd and Keith Stewart edging the win by 1 point from Elspeth George and Alan Fraser.  John Wilson from Dalgety Bay came in third in his RS300.

In the Finns Russell Ward (Strathclyde Loch) beat Dave Harcourt (Dalgety Bay) by 2 points to win a close fought weekend between the 6 boats.

In the slow handicap two local Toppers of Neil Herron and Ruaridh Stevenson each took three bullets but Neil managed to scrape the win by virtue of persistence in tough choppy conditions.

The Prizegiving was held and the competitors and helpers were presented their trophies by the Club’s Commodore Andy Marshall and his wife Katrina. The trophies were hand crafted models designed and made by Ken Marshall.

Jim Hunt made a note of thanks on behalf of the competitors and that concluded a fantastic weekend on and off the water.
